Training and Clinical Experience
Dr Adrian Liew received his basic medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 1998. He underwent basic specialty training in Internal Medicine and was admitted as a member to the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom in 2003. Subsequently, he completed his advanced specialty training in renal medicine and was entered into the Register of Specialists in Renal Medicine in 2007.
He was then elected into various academic institutions, including as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore; Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh; and Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology. In 2016, Dr Liew was awarded the Master of Clinical Epidemiology with Distinction by the University of Newcastle in Australia.
Dr Adrian Liew is the founding Head of the Department of Renal Medicine at Tan Tock Seng Hospital from 2009-2018. During his tenure as Head, he developed a renowned glomerular diseases and chronic peritoneal dialysis program, which became a training centre for physicians around the region.
He was also a visiting consultant to numerous institutions in Singapore at various time points, including National University Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Changi General Hospital, National Kidney Foundation and Kidney Dialysis Foundation. He is also a visiting consultant to various overseas clinical units, including Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar, and helped to train nephrologists and general physicians in the care of patients with kidney diseases.
International Appointments
Dr Adrian Liew holds multiple leadership appointments in the international nephrology community. He is an elected member of the Executive Committee and Council Member of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). He chairs the ISN Oceania-Southeast Asia Regional Board and the ISN Renal Disaster Preparedness Working Group; and co-leads the Dialysis sub-group of the ISN Global End-stage Kidney Disease Strategy and the ISN-Indonesia Project, both of which aim to develop strategies and blue-prints in managing the global burden of kidney diseases. In addition, he is also an elected Executive and Honorary Secretary of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) and is a member of the Continuing Medical Education Committee of both the ISN and Asia-Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN). In the region, Dr Liew chairs the Southeast Asia Glomerulonephritis Network and the Southeast Asia Peritoneal Dialysis Network, both of which aim to improve the care and outcomes of patients with glomerular diseases and on peritoneal dialysis treatment.
In recognition of his expertise, Dr Liew is the only Singaporean appointed to two working groups of the most commonly referenced international guidelines in nephrology – the KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) Clinical Practice Guideline on Diabetes Management in Chronic Kidney Disease and the KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline Update on Glomerular Diseases. He also chairs the APSN Clinical Practice Guidelines on Diabetic Kidney Disease and is a member of the working group for the ISPD Recommendations on Prescribing High Quality, Goal Directed Peritoneal Dialysis.
In recognition of his contribution to peritoneal dialysis, Dr Liew became the only Southeast Asian to receive the prestigious John Maher Award from the ISPD in 2020.
Clinical Research
Dr Adrian Liew is an appointed Scientific Leader with George Clinical, an international clinical trial organization that drives multi-centre clinical research around the world. He sits on global steering committees for clinical trials, and had been the National Leader and Principal Investigator of key clinical trials in diabetic kidney diseases, IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, membranous nephropathy, peritoneal dialysis, anemia and cardiovascular disease in kidney patients. Dr Liew is also an appointed Associate Editor for the Nephrology Journal (Official Journal of APSN) and sits on the editorial boards of Kidney International (Official Journal of ISN), Peritoneal Dialysis International (Official Journal of ISPD) and Kidney and Blood Pressure Research Journal.
Other Professional Appointments
Before moving into the current practice, Dr Liew is a Senior Consultant with the Ministry of Health and sits on various advisory committees, including the Transplantation Advisory Committee and the Drug Advisory Committee. He chaired and implemented the National HALT-CKD Program across all the polyclinics, aiming to reduce the incidence of end-stage kidney disease and slow the progression of chronic kidney disease in Singapore.
Medical Education
Dr Adrian Liew was an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine and Lead for the Renal Medicine Curriculum with the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at the Nanyang Technological University-Imperial College London. In addition, he was the Clinical OSCE Lead for the medical school and was responsible for the organization of the Clinical OSCE Examinations for the clinical years. Dr Liew was also appointed a Senior Clinical Lecturer for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Liew is a member of the National Renal Medicine Residency Advisory Committee. He had also served as the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and clinical core faculty member of the Renal Medicine Senior Residency Program with the National Healthcare Group. He is also involved in the training of nurses and lectures at the Advanced Nursing Diploma Course (Nephrology/Urology) by Nanyang Polytechnic and the Masters of Nursing Course by the Alice Lee School of Nursing at the National University of Singapore. He is also appointed the Preceptor for the ISN Sister Renal Centre with the National Kidney and Tranplant Institute (NKTI) in Manila, Philippines, and helps NKTI to develop and improve their glomerular diseases and peritoneal dialysis programs.
